Portrait With A Piano

With an emphasis on rhythm, these piano-orientated tracks result from McLeod’s experiments with hybrid styles, joining classical with her early experiences as a rock keyboard player. Includes her 2 Rock Sonatas, the ebullient “Music for Four” for pianos and percussion, “Seascapes” for piano trio, and what some consider her finest solo piano writing, “Piano Piece 1965”

I was delighted to get to work on this album with Wayne Laird at Atoll Records.

Jenny McLeod passed away in November 2022 at the age go 81. Her contribution to New Zealand music is unparalleled. She was naturally gifted and a sharp intelligence right until the end. She will be missed, but we will always have her music!

One aim I had with this recording was for the Rock Sonata No. 1 to be given a sound befitting its influences; rock, jazz, Liszt-ian complexity that stretches Stephen De Pledge to the full.
