from BÁRRU – released on Atoll Records.
The second movement of my String Quartet, written in 2023, reflects further on the Alta controversy of the 1980’s.
This slow piece, is in itself inspired by the weaving craft of the Sámi people.
The Sámi are the descendants of nomadic peoples who had inhabited the northern arctic regions of Scandinavia and Russia for many millennia. The simple musical application of short followed by long notes – quaver, then dotted crotchet etc, weaved and blended together, only interrupted briefly by a counter weaving pattern.
Performed by my good friends, Towha:
Yanghe Yu, violin 1
James Jin, violin 2
Andrew Beer, viola
Matthias Balzat, cello
From the album, Bàrru, released on Atoll Records NZ, distributed by Naxos USA.
