Somi Kim debut solo album – sparkling performances of two compositions inspired by visual art – the great 19th century Russian work by Mussorgsky, “Pictures at an Exhibition”, still a challenge to pianists 150 years later; preceded by Janet Jennings’ composition written to compliment the Mussorgsky. A beautiful accompanying booklet is illustrated with the art and provides insights into the music.
This was recorded in Kirikiriroa, at the Gallagher Academy of Arts, in the concert chamber. I spent about 5 weeks getting the Steinway D ready for the session. I am very thankful for Michael Ashby’s tuning and preparing this volatile, but beautiful instrument.
It’s always a tremendous pleasure to work Somi, a truly wonderful artist and person. She was heavily pregnant with her daughter, Aria Rose, during this session too.
